How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog

Bathing PetsBathing is an essential part of taking care of your dog. Not only does it keep your dog’s coat shiny and clean, it keeps knots out of their fur, which can be especially painful. In addition, it’s an opportune time to wash off any insects that get caught in the dog’s fur.

The type of wash you use will depend on the length of your dog’s fur as well as their skin type. For dogs with sensitive skin, you will want to use a delicate and dye-free soap and make sure you are always using a shampoo specifically designed for washing dogs. Human soap can be too harsh for an animal’s skin and you could end up doing damage to their skin.

But how often should you bathe dog? Here is a general guideline to follow:

  • When bathing your puppy for the first time, ease into the process as there might be quite a bit of trepidation at first. Once a week or every other week is fine, unless you notice your pup to be exceptionally dirty.
  • As your pup gets older, weekly baths with a mild shampoo will be just fine to keep their coat clean and tangle free. Be sure to brush your dog before and after the bath. You don’t want to make any tangles worse by tightening the knots.
  • If your dog happens to be itching a lot after bathing, you might be bathing too often. Switch to bathing once every other week until the itching subsides and seek out a gentler soap if you are not already using one.
  • Always consult with your dog’s veterinarian if you suspect any problems with your dog’s fur coat, especially if there is severe pain or extreme itching.
