Health Guarantee

All Scarlet’s Fancy Poodle puppies have been vet checked by a licensed veterinarian before they are offered for sale.  The Health Guarantee starts at the purchase of the puppy and is effective for a period of 2 years against life threatening genetic problems.  There are 3 important steps to keep the Health Guarantee in effect.

  1. The buyer must take their puppy to the vet of their choice within 4 days to have a Well Puppy examination done to confirm the health of their puppy.

  1. The next very important step after your vet’s Well Puppy check is completed is to purchase canine health insurance for your puppy.

  1. The third very important step is to register your puppy’s microchip with your information.

This health statement describes the health of each puppy and is part of the purchase package. The puppies have been given their vaccinations current to date.  The date for the next booster will be written on the Health Records. Puppies have been wormed at 2 week intervals since birth. Dates and types of medications are listed on the Health Record Pamphlet. Your puppy has already had at least it’s first round of vaccines. Buyer agrees to take their puppy to the vet of their choice to finish the series of vaccines that every young canine needs to give them immunity against life threatening diseases.

SELLER AND BUYER BOTH UNDERSTAND AND AGREE on the conditions and requirements of this agreement. The purchase of a puppy from seller by buyer and taking possession of the puppy, verifies that buyer understands and agrees to the conditions and requirements of this Health Guarantee.

If Buyers Vet’s  finds any abnormalities, Buyer must return puppy within 1 week, and only then will the buyer be issued a full 100% refund of the purchase price. Seller will not discount the price of any puppy or dog or refund any money if Buyer elects to keep the puppy.

Patellas will only be guaranteed until the puppy is again checked by your Veterinarian during its initial “well puppy check” within the first 72 hours of bringing your puppy home. Environmental causes can change patellas, such as injury or lack of proper nutrition. The checking of Patellas is a an opinion and very subjective call. The nature of a very small puppy is to have patellas that are not as tight as a larger puppy. You may have 5 Vets check the patellas, and you may get 5 varying opinions. The most accurate opinions are evaluated by a very experienced Vet, who has seen it all. The statics are that 60% of all dogs under 25 lbs do have loose or luxating patellas.  It is far more common to have a loose patella than to have tight ones. The smaller the dog, the more chance its patellas will be loose. Patellas in very small dogs are unlikely to cause any adverse affect.  However, here at Scarlet’s Fancy we have been able to reverse that average and nearly all of our puppies patellas are good.

It is possible that the readjustment to a new home and unfamiliar environment can cause  puppies to experience minor challenges caused by the stress of going to their new homes. Your puppy may experience lack of appetite for a few days, possibly loose stools, or develop a minor infection (refer to your Puppy Care Information sheet). If you think your puppy needs supportive care, visit a older well experienced veterinarian for treatment or information how to support your puppy through the initial readjustment.

Please be sure you remove any toxins, such as snail bait, ant poisons, zylitol (common in many candies and gums) toxic plants, vehicle coolant to name a few from the area your puppy plays in. These substances are poison and can cause liver or kidney failure and death. Do not feed your puppy any chocolate as it is very toxic to dogs. Pick up any electric cords. Do not leave your puppy on the bed or couch, as they are babies and could fall off. These are a few of the things that can injure or kill your puppy/dog.

If during the health guarantee period your puppy should fall ill, text Linda DeBlauw immediately 805 748-2095. We will get back to you at our earliest time possible. If puppy needs to visit a vet Linda will let you know. The  puppy must be diagnosed by 2 different Veterinarians at different practices. At times a canine pathologist must also exam the pup/dog and that report and all three reports, plus the veterinary history of the pup since buyers took possession must be submitted back to seller. Buyer must provide all veterinary records since taking possession of the pup to the seller. Buyers will provide seller the right to view and permission to speak with the veterinarians that have treated the pup or dog. Each Vet must write a statement in which the Vet determines caused the illness, and these letters must be delivered to the Seller within 15 days of the Vet visits. Seller has the right to also have her Vet check the puppy at Seller’s expense. Seller will not be responsible for any Veterinarian Expenses

Should within 2 years your puppy be diagnosed with a life threatening problem determined to be a passed on to the dog genetically, such as heart, kidney or liver disorder, seizures, leg perthes, you must return the puppy/dog to the seller at your expense. If you elect to keep the puppy or dog regardless if you think the puppy/dog has a genetic problem, no compensation will be provided to you. After puppy/dog is returned to seller, and having the opportunity 7 days to exam the reports, you will receive another puppy of the same value as soon as it is available. There is no money refund. Letters from 2 different Vets that are not affiliated with each other must be delivered to seller within 10 days of buyer receiving the testing results. Seller has the right to also ask for an exam report from  a canine pathologist. This is because so many diseases can be misdiagnosed by canine vets, just like they are with human doctors. Seller will not be responsible for any veterinary expenses. Seller will be responsible only for providing buyer with another puppy of equal value as soon as it is available and will pay the airline fees if applicable.

*Should the puppy die within the first 72 hours after purchase, buyer must have a necropsy performed by a licensed veterinarian, other than the veterinarian that had been treating the dog up to its death.  Sometimes a pathology report will be provided to seller by buyer if seller requests it. A copy of the reports written on the licensed veterinarian’s letterhead must be forwarded to the seller before determining if a refund will be provided. Buyer understands and agrees that if the puppy is returned or has died, that seller will have the right to speak to the licensed veterinarian who completed the report for any further information that may be necessary to make the determination whether the buyer will be a refunded. The reason for an necropsy would be to rule out that the cause of death was due to buyer negligence to keep the puppy/dog safe from hazards to its health, due to accidents, exposure to ingesting a toxin or ineffective parenting of the puppy i.e. not finishing the vaccination series,  properly fed, watered, sheltered from cold or heat.

*If puppy or dog is purchased for the purpose of show or breeding, no guarantee is made as to the potential show quality or breeding success of the puppy or dog.

To return your puppy you and receive a money refund you must:

*Return your new puppy to the Seller within 7 days of the time of possession of the puppy by the buyer. Along with the puppy, buyer must provide a signed statement from 2 licensed Veterinarians at different practices, on the veterinarian’s letterhead showing the date and time puppy was given the examination, and why he/she believed the puppy had a life threatening genetic problem before buyer received the puppy. Buyer agrees to provide all veterinary records to us since the date they took the puppy home.

*If Buyer chooses to keep the puppy, regardless of any health issue, Seller will not issue a refund for the cost of puppy, or any veterinarian expenses or airfare.

*If another puppy is available, the Buyer can choose to replace the returned puppy with the new one the Buyer chooses.

*If buyer chooses a replacement puppy that has a value for more or less than the original puppy’s purchase price, then the Seller or the Buyer will make up the difference in cost before the replacement puppy is picked up or shipped.

Refer to payment methods page.

If your puppy should fall ill, the  puppy must be diagnosed by 2 different Veterinarians at different practices.  At times a canine pathologist must be consulted by buyer and a report from the pathologist must accompany the vet letters.  Each Vet must write a statement in which the Vet determines caused the illness, and these letters must be delivered to the Seller within 5 days of the Vet visits.  Seller has the right to also have her Vet check the puppy at her expense.   Seller will not be responsible for any Veterinarian Expenses

Should within 2 years your puppy be diagnosed with a life threatening problem determined to be a passed on to the dog genetically, such as heart, kidney or liver disorder, seizures, Cushings disease, leg perthes, skin disorder, you will receive another puppy of the same value.  Letters from 2 different Vets that are not affiliated with each other must be delivered to seller within 10 days of testing.  Seller has the option to ask for and be provided with a canine pathologist report if requested by Seller.  This is because so many diseases can be misdiagnosed by canine vets, just like they are with human doctors.   Being completely honest, I have raised dogs for 50 + years and have never had a dog die other from old age, or for that matter display a genetic problem.  I never give my dogs toxic flea meds or expose dogs to anything that could be toxic.  If I would not take the medicine myself, I will not give it to my dogs.  And being a breeder, I have had owners loose their dogs, or come up with problems.  Because of the huge difference in my experience, I am beginning to think that owners are exposing their pets to 1.  Prescription Systemic flea/tick products and other medications that cause a variety of symptoms that the vet’s may further aggravate by adding other medications to treat the symptoms of toxic flea/tick meds.  See article below.   Also buyer may be giving treats bought in pet store that are toxic. Keep all records for you dog in a file.  Vet records, food receipts, supplement receipts, you will be asked for them.  Seller will not be responsible for any veterinary expenses. Seller will be responsible only for providing buyer with another puppy of equal value, and will pay the airline fees if applicable.

Items not covered by your Health Guarantee:

*Parasites: including Giardia and Coccidia, worms, mites, fleas, other pests, which are common in puppies. All puppies are dewormed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age. All canines should be on a maintenance schedule to control worms specific to the area that the puppy now resides in. Coccidia is easy to treat with a prescription from your vet of Albon.   Giardia can be more stubborn – treat with a prescription from your vet of Secnidozole.    Giardia can be stubborn, but in time as your puppy’s immune system develops, the immune system will rid the puppy of the parasite.

*Hypoglycemia: Is sometimes seen in very small puppies.  Keep Nutrical on hand, and consult your vet.    Q.  How will you know if your puppy is suffering from hypoglycemia?  A.  Your puppy will be lethargic and may lay out flat on the floor.  If this should occur, immediate open it’s mouth and put in 1/4 teaspoon of Nutrical or another similar high calorie supplement.  Have this on hand before your puppy arrives.  Consult your vet.

It is possible that the stress natural to the readjustment to their new home can cause some puppies to experience minor health challenges.  Refer to your puppy care information sheet emailed to you.

These actions will VOID your Guarantee

  1.  Changing food, even if your Vet recommends it.  (Your puppy has been weaned and raised on the recommended food).
  2. Applying liquid or giving oral PRESCRIPTION FLEA OR TICK medication** (See Below) to your puppy prescribed by your Vet.  These medications are toxic to dogs.  Just imagine if you were given and took a pill or had a drop of medication put on your skin, and afterward for 1 month any insect that bit you would die.  What does this say about the toxicity of these products.
  3. Feeding any treats except Trader Joe’s dog biscuits or  Milkbone brand dog biscuits.  After you have had your pup for 3 months, it will have adjusted to its new environment and you can feed treats very sparingly.  Too many treats too often will give your pup diarrhea.
  4.  We have a lot of experience in raising healthy, beautiful, Poodles.  We know our breed and have a lot of practical experience in keeping them healthy and vibrant.    We will be happy to give you practical advice.  Your puppy should not need any extraordinary treatments to keep it healthy.  (Same food, NO prescription flea or tick medications, minimal treats).
  5. If your puppy is having a health problem, you must notify us within one week of the the onset of a health problem.  We will be more than happy to give you information to help get your puppy back on track.  Do not allow any invasive treatments without first consulting with us for our opinion.   As we do receive many emails daily and it can be difficult for us to read them all.
  6. Letting your vet do invasive procedures without first notifying us by email or text and allowing 72 hours for a response to the problem your pup is experiencing.  We do not pay vet bills.

Bringing a new puppy into your home is a lifetime commitment. We wish loving, patient and stable homes for all our puppies.  Puppies are like baby humans, they require lots of support and patience.  Never be harsh with your puppy.  Harshness or impatience delays the training progress.  Mistakes will be made in the beginning, the puppies are babies.  If you do not have the time to train a new puppy, please do not purchase from us.

Each puppy will be accompanied with their health records, and a bag of the food it was weaned on.   FEED ONLY THE FOOD YOU RECEIVE WHEN YOU PICK UP YOUR PUPPY.  For Toy pups use Merrick Classic Puppy, for Puppies that will mature at 10 lbs plus feed only Purina Pro- Plan Focus, Chicken and Rice 26/16.  DO NOT FEED ANY OTHER FOOD.   Puppies are babies, similar to a human baby. Patience, consistency, cuddling and verbal rewarding are of most importance in training your puppy.   No scolding, as it will make your puppy not let you know when they have to relieve themselves. The more consistent their humans are, the faster and easier it will be to completely house train your puppy.  It is very important that you have time, patience and the right technique to take your puppy through this first important step.  After potty training is complete and your puppy will go on command, you can start with the next lesson.

When the puppy is 4 months old and has had it’s last booster shot, it is then time to take your puppy to puppy training classes.  These classes are very important to help your puppy to learn basic commands and for you to learn how to give the commands in the way puppies understand.  Taking the time to do this will make your relationship with your new puppy a true joy.  People will be amazed to see how well your puppy responds to your requests.

Prescription Systemic pills or liquid flea medicine VOIDS your guarantee.   Both of these  types of medicines has caused severe life threatening symptoms in some of our puppies, including seizures.    It is our belief that those medications are too strong for the size of our Toy pups, and are are unhealthy for any dog.  Our belief is that many illnesses that shorten the life of your dog are caused because the dogs were treated or have ingested toxins.   Would you put a medication on yourself that would kill a flea that bit you?   Wouldn’t your blood be toxic.   Don’t give your puppy anything that you would not do for yourself.  There are non-toxic flea control medications on the market, please use them.

NEWS ARTICLE PUBLISHED BY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION 9/2018

** These flea and tick medications for pets are causing seizures, other neurological issues, FDA warns Madeline Farber 8 hours ago FDA warns flea and tick meds linked to neurological problems in pets According to the FDA, some animals receiving flea and tick medications in the isooxazoline class have experienced adverse events such as muscle tremors, seizures, and ataxia, a lack of muscle coordination. Heads up, pet owners: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday warned some flea and tick medications can potentially cause “neurological adverse events” in dogs and cats. The warning applies to drugs in the isoxazoline class, the FDA said. Pet owners who are currently treating their furry friend with Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica should be wary, as the agency said some animals treated with these medications “have experienced adverse events such as muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizure.” “Another product in this class, Credelio, recently received FDA approval. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations,” the FDA continued. HEAVY RAINS CAN BE TOXIC FOR PETS While the FDA said it “carefully reviewed studies and other data on Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica prior to approval,” the agency has requested manufacturers of these products to change product labeling to better “provide veterinarians and pet owners with the information they need to make treatment decisions for each pet on an individual basis.” The FDA says officials closely monitor medications for the first three years after approval. If any reports of adverse effects arise within that time period, the agency then typically releases updated safety information.
