How To Safely Switch Your Poodles Food

Whether you want to switch to a different brand or an entirely different diet, like a raw diet, you should know how to switch your poodle’s food properly.

Many think that you can immediately switch and continue feeding as usual without any sort of process. This is not only false, but it will assuredly lead to stomach upset, digestive issues, and general sickness of your pup! Below are two ways to ensure you safely switch your poodle’s food.

Go Slow

We at Scarlet’s Fancy Poodles recommend a full 21 days to switch over your pet’s food. There can be varying sources on what percentages and what days and times, but the general rule of thumb is as follows:

Days 1-5: 80% old food, 20% new

Days 6-11: 60% old food, 40% new

Days 12-17: 40% old food, 60% new

Days 18-21: 20% old food, 80% new.

Keep an eye on your pup, and don’t be worried about doing an extra day or two of old food- remember, it takes 21 days to fully switch!

Pick High Quality

You want to ensure you choose high-quality food for your poodle. Food isn’t just a way to fill a stomach- it affects their fur, coat, skin, and their body! Many people are apprehensive- be it due to cost or uncertainty- about a raw diet. It is important to be aware of how you are feeding your poodle, and if it works within your poodles diet, it never hurts to add some high-quality toppers to your poodles food. Some ideas are:

– A raw egg

– Plain Yogurt

– Carrots

Note: certain items are poisonous to poodles! Make sure you read up, and if you are in doubt, always double-check.
