What Are Some Things You Should Know Before Grooming Your Poodle?

How to Groom a Poodle

Poodles make wonderful and adorable pets. They’re smart, social, and have a beautiful coat. However, one challenge that poodle owners struggle with is getting adjusted to the grooming. Poodles need a little extra love and care to keep their lush, curly coat free from tangles and knots.

Because poodles have such a unique coat, it’s important to research how to best take care of it before picking up a brush and a pair of grooming scissors.

Let’s take a look at some of the important things you should know about your poodle’s coat before grooming.

Do Poodles Have Fur or Hair?

Poodles are as close to being a non-shedding, hypoallergenic dog as you can get. Poodles are considered hypoallergenic because they have hair instead of fur. Because of this, poodles are very grooming-intensive. Their curly coat requires a lot of brushing, clipping and trimming to maintain their perfect condition.

If you don’t take proper care of your dog’s hair, you can risk paying for veterinarian care to treat painful skin infections.

Puppy Hair is Different Than Adult Poodle Hair

Even from a young age, poodles are considered hypoallergenic dogs. However, they still occasionally shed their hair. However, because their hair is curly, it catches all of the hair they lose and keeps it from falling out easily.

You should start a grooming routine as soon as you bring home your poodle puppy. Remember, a puppies hair will be a lot more sensitive than an adult poodle. Their hair is very fine, so make sure you’re extra gentle while grooming.

What are The Best Cuts for My Poodle?

There are plenty of ways that you can style your poodle’s coat to make it easier to groom and maintain.

The Lamb Clip is a classic cut for your poodle. All fur is clipped to the same short length, leaving the poodle to look like it’s wearing a warm coat.

The Puppy Clip is a popular cut for poodles that are under 12 months. With this cut, the groomer will shave the face, feet, and tail.

The Teddy Bear Clip is one of our personal favorites. This cut leaves your poodle looking like a classic teddy bear, with hair evenly clipped throughout the body. This cut gives them rounded facial angles, and it’s an excellent choice for smaller poodles.
