What do you think is the most popular name for a dog? If you thought, “Max,” then you’re right. Other popular names include Molly, Sam and Maggie.
Did you know there are more than 150 dog breeds? They’re generally divided into 8 classes which include “sporting,” “hound,” “terrier,” “toy,” and “herding.” All dogs, regardless of breed, are direct descendants of wolves.
The lightest dog, weight-wise, is the Chihuahua at just 2 pounds, while among the heaviest are Great Danes at 150 pounds. They don’t call ‘em Great for nothing.
If you see your dog’s tongue hanging out, you might think they’re sweating through salivating, but the truth is they sweat through–get this– the pads of their feet!
Quick: who has more teeth? You or your pet dog? If you said “dog,” you’re right. Dogs have 42 teeth while we humans only have 32.
Puppies are born blind, deaf and toothless. If you’ve ever noticed older dogs’ ear perking up, that’s because their adult ears act like radar dishes– they can locate the source of a sound much better than humans can. No wonder dogs are often used in search-and-rescue cases.
Poodles may be thought of as good lookers who help their owners project connotations of wealth and luxury, but many years ago poodles were used by hunters to retrieve ducks from the water. With their “soft mouth,” they could/can gently pick up wounded or dead game, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re athletic swimmers if they need to be.
Speaking of poodles, Scarlet’s Fancy of California breeds red poodle puppies, red tiny’s, teacup poodles, red Moyen-Klein’s, and red teddy bear toy poodles. Unlike most dogs who shed, poodles have fur that will grow continuously so they need regular grooming. Interestingly, they’re hypoallergenic and generally odorless, so poodles may make especially good pets for owners who have allergies and/or don’t want a smelly, shedding dog in their home.
