Just as you would baby-proof your home before your baby starts crawling, you should also be taking steps to puppy-proof your home for your new puppy. Dogs love exploring new environments, so when they first enter your home, they will be eager to start sniffing every inch of your home.
To help keep your new puppy safe and to ensure that your house stays in its best shape, here are some tips that will help you begin to puppy-proof your home:
Check Your Windows and Doors
Until your puppy is fully trained, make sure your windows and doors remain shut. If your dog sees another dog or animal outside, they may be eager to run out to chase it. So as a safety precaution, make sure you keep your doors and windows closed as you’re training your dog.
Supervise Your Dog While They’re Inside and Outside
If you leave your puppy unattended inside your home, you risk the chance of them soiling your carpet or chewing up your favorite furniture. On the other hand, if you leave your pup unsupervised outside of the house, they may run away while chasing another animal, or they may start digging holes throughout your yard.
To avoid your puppy from getting into some serious trouble, always keep a close eye on them while they’re training.
Be Aware of Heights
If you live in a high-rise apartment building, or you have a home with a balcony, keep your puppy leashed as they are exploring these high areas. If the rails on your balcony are spaced out far enough, it can be a big enough space for your puppy to squeeze through. To avoid a dangerous fall or to keep your puppy from getting stuck, consider blocking these spaces off.
Keep Hazardous Items Out of Reach
Cleaning supplies, certain foods, and plants can all be toxic if your pet gets ahold of them. Just to be safe, it’s best to keep all items out of reach from your pet. Whether you choose to tuck them away into a cabinet or place them on a high shelf, make sure that your pet can’t get a hold of these items.
