Holiday Safety Tips for Dogs

From decorations to sugary treats, there is plenty of mischief for your dog to get into this holiday season. Now that November is here and families are beginning to unpack their holiday decorations, it is important to take some extra safety precautions to ensure a safe and happy holiday season for you and your dog.

Decorate Your Home with Care

Especially for puppies, the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons are full of lots of new experiences. We recommend placing decorations and lights out of your dog’s reach and taking care when putting up the Christmas tree. Whether yours is real or artificial, it is important to make sure it is securely in place to keep an inquisitive puppy from tipping it over.

Holiday plants can also cause safety concerns for pets. Both holly and mistletoe have dangerous side effects, causing nausea, diarrhea and cardiovascular problems. Consider using artificial plants instead or choose ones that are non-toxic to dogs.

Maintain Your Dog’s Regular Diet

As much as we love to share our leftovers with our pets, it is important to maintain their regular, healthy diet throughout the holiday season. Dietary changes can cause nausea and diarrhea, along with unwanted weight gain. Keep your pet’s special treats to a minimum and remind your children and guests not to share their food – especially candy – with your furry family members.

Create a Cozy Retreat

While we humans love the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, not all dogs enjoy the loud noises and numerous parties that take place throughout the fall and winter months. No matter how much your dog likes to mingle with the crowd, we recommend creating a quiet and comfortable space for them to retreat to in case the noise and excitement becomes overwhelming. Put your pet’s bed and a few toys in a quiet room away from the party to give them a chance to rest and relax while you celebrate with friends and family.

Also remember to keep your pet’s collar on and check the gates before letting them out in the yard during a party. With so many people coming and going, it is easy for a latch to be left unhooked.
