The Do’s and Don’ts of Feeding Your Poodle

If you’ve just picked up your poodle from the breeder, you are probably excited, and can’t wait to spoil Dog food pouring into an overfilled bowl your pup with all the love and treats in the world! At Scarlet’s Fancy Poodle we know you can’t wait to pamper your puppy, but there is some information about feeding you need to know to make sure your pup stays safe and healthy! From timeline, to ingredients, to amount- it can all vary. Below are some guidelines on what to do to ensure your pup has a healthy, long life!

Keep on Familiar Food

Do not take your poodle puppy home from the breeder and switch their food. You must keep them on the same food that your breeder used. Poodles have very sensitive stomachs, and doing so will not only harm your puppy, it will cause high vet bills, and in many cases void your guarantee. You must wait until your poodle is 8 months old before switching food brands or incorporating other elements (such as a raw diet).

Avoid Overfeeding

You may think chubby animals are cute- but an overweight animal is an unhappy animal. It can come with consequences such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and a reduced lifespan. Always follow recommended feeding amount and schedule, and make sure you regularly exercise and play with your pup!

Be Aware of Caloric Differences

You may think a scrap of food here or there isn’t doing any harm; however the ways that calories breakdown in our food, and how it translates to dogs, are vastly different. For example, a 1 oz piece of cheese for your pup is the equivalent to one and a half full meals for your pup! Be mindful, and give dog treats sparingly.

Here at Scarlet’s Fancy Poodles, we love each pup like it is our own. We are a family business and have been proudly raising poodles for nearly 60 years.
